I did a little research and found out that the typeface was actually commissioned by Frank Pick way back in 1916. It's the work of one Edward Johnston in whose name a foundation has been formed. The typeface was slightly tweaked in 1980 but it has been more or less in constant use for almost 90 years.

The collaboration of Pick and Johnston must have been a match made in heaven. They also gave us the superb London Underground roundel.

Why was calligraphy so important in the early 19th century and why did his peers deem his efforts vulgar and cause to lose respect for Mr. Johnston. I have done a little researching regarding the importance of calligraphy in different areas of the world and I could not find a specific reason why calligraphy would've put Mr. Johnston in that situation with his colleagues. I know that calligraphy in Asian and Islamic cultures are more important in the ideas of religion rather than art. I also wondered if his second unfinished book was ever published and to my understanding and research, there is not a published second book of Mr. Edward Johnston.
